Still, both of these engines punch well below the best-in-class offerings from just about every other brand in this segment. The uplevel engine (standard on ST and Avenir trims) is a turbo 1.3-liter engine making 155 hp and 174 pounds-feet of torque, which seems like a “Why’d they even bother?” kind of thing given the minor improvement in both numbers. That’s not a lot of grunt for a vehicle this size, but its turbocharged nature should help provide as much torque as possible fairly low in the rev range, creating the illusion of peppy performance. The base model is a 1.2-liter engine making 137 horsepower and 162 pounds-feet of torque, mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. The area that Buick left alone is what’s powering the Encore GX: a choice of two engines, both turbocharged three-cylinders. However, the 2024 Encore GX isn’t any bigger than the outgoing model, and you’re still reminded that this is a subcompact SUV - there’s decent room for four adults in there, but five will be a pinch. Materials quality is still quite good in the new model, as well, with soft-touch materials, faux stitching in strategic places, and pleasing shapes and coverings. The Encore GX won’t distract you while driving by requiring too much attention to operate its various systems, and that’s a good thing. Also, kudos to Buick for not going totally touch-sensitive while lesser trim levels retain full knobs and buttons, the top trims get haptic-feedback buttons that are still better than some competitors’ full touchscreen systems for things like climate controls. The new Encore GX comes with a new multimedia system, and it looks pretty slick and works relatively quickly. Nineteen total inches of screens greet you, split between an 11-inch touchscreen and an 8-inch digital gauge cluster. While the 2024 Encore GX’s exterior refresh is mild, the interior gets a more significant redo, with a totally redesigned dash that incorporates the first appearance of Buick’s new Virtual Cockpit System. Overall, the new Encore GX is an attractively styled runabout that should continue its popularity based on looks alone. The new Avenir trim looks the business, too, with cues that are unique to the trim level and continue the premium look offered on other Buick models. In a sea of sameness and muted earth tones that seem to be popular these days, these colorful offerings are most welcome to see. There are some beautiful hues coming, including blue and red, that really make the little crossover pop. The front end of the new Encore GX is inspired heavily by the Wildcat, and it gives the new SUV a sleeker, modernized, updated look.īut perhaps one of the better features of the new Encore GX is the fact that Buick isn’t afraid to offer it up in actual colors. What you will see are elements of the Wildcat across the rest of the Buick lineup, where it will not be quite as successful as this low, slinky, feline coupe. It’s gorgeous, but it’ll likely never see production in this two-door electric luxury coupe form. Have a long look at the 2022 Buick Wildcat concept car. But do Buick’s updates to the Encore GX go far enough to keep it competitive with other small premium SUVs? That answer is less certain. The Encore GX comes with new tech, new styling and a new range-topping Avenir trim level if you want to buy the nicest version you can get.
